Maharashtra Man Threatens Assam Women with Deepfakes on Instagram

A disturbing cybercrime case has emerged from Assam, where a man from Maharashtra, allegedly operating under the Instagram handle @akshayhole0102, is accused of targeting women with violent threats and AI-generated deepfakes. Reports claim he threatens to k!dn@p and r@p* women who reject his advances, even boasting about abducting them “like Ravan took Sita.” The suspect is also said to create fake Instagram accounts in victims’ names to post manipulated content, sparking outrage across Northeast India.

A Pattern of Harassment

According to social media reports circulating on X, the individual sends menacing messages to Assam women, escalating to threats of abduction and assault if his proposals are declined. Using deepfake technology, he allegedly fabricates compromising images or videos, posting them via fake accounts to defame victims. While these claims await official confirmation, the case mirrors rising cybercrime trends in India, with over 1,200 deepfake-related complaints reported to the Ministry of Electronics and IT in 2024.

“This is a wake-up call for online safety. Women in Assam deserve protection from digital predators,” said Priya Baruah, a Guwahati-based cybersecurity advocate.

The viral nature of the allegations, amplified by X posts with millions of views, has prompted calls for action from Assam’s youth, urging authorities to investigate the Instagram account @akshayhole0102.

Why This Matters

For Northeast India, where digital connectivity is booming, this case highlights the dark side of social media. Assam women, already vulnerable to online harassment, face heightened risks from deepfakes, which can ruin reputations and livelihoods. The incident underscores the need for stronger cybercrime laws and awareness, especially for young users navigating platforms like Instagram. Recent cases, like the arrest of a Mumbai man for deepfake extortion in 2024, show authorities are cracking down, but more action is needed.
